ESPN has laid off around 20 on-air personalities, including some of its biggest stars such as Jeff Van Gundy, Max Kellerman, Keyshawn Johnson, Suzy Kolber, Jalen Rose, and Todd McShay. The layoffs are part of a series of cost-cutting measures at ESPN, which is owned by Disney. The company has previously undergone three rounds of layoffs, which were ordered by Disney CEO Bob Iger and aimed to eliminate 7,000 jobs.
ESPN’s parent company, Disney, has been trying to cut costs by $5.5 billion globally, including the elimination of roughly 7,000 jobs. ESPN also experienced 300 layoffs in 2020 as part of a Disney shift in strategy to prioritize its streaming service. The layoffs are expected to save ESPN millions of dollars by cutting those making in excess of seven figures per year.

ESPN Layoffs 2023 Reason
The reason behind ESPN’s layoffs in 2023 is to increase profits as part of a larger plan by parent company Disney. Disney has been trying to cut costs by $5.5 billion globally, including the elimination of roughly 7,000 jobs.
According to an internal memo obtained by multiple news outlets, ESPN is undergoing “a small group of job cuts in the short-term and an ongoing focus on managing costs when we negotiate individual contract renewals in the months ahead”. ESPN is categorizing the departures as a necessary cost-saving measure in the area of public-facing.
