What is the latest update in Sahara India refund case?
As of August 2022, more than Rs. 1 lakh crore funds of around 13 crore investors are stuck in several Sahara India entities. Sahara India has deposited an aggregate amount of Rs. 15,506.81 crores (against the Principal Amount Rs 25,781.37 Crore) into the designated ‘SEBI-Sahara Refund’ Account.
However, only Rs. 138.07 crores, including principal and interest, has been returned by SEBI to Sahara India’s investors so far. The Centre has sought Rs. 5,000 crores from the SEBI-Sahara refund account to settle the matter.
Sahara group deposited INR 15,448.67 crore to the refund account, as of February 1, 2020, and a cheque of INR 41.59 crore was also deposited in late January. SEBI has refunded Rs. 129 crores to investors of Sahara companies as of March 31, 2021.
