Indonesia Earthquake Tsunami Warning
On Tuesday, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the Tanimbar islands in Indonesia. The earthquake prompted panicked residents in the area to flee their homes. Although a tsunami warning was initially issued, it was lifted after three hours. Initial reports indicated that there was limited damage caused by the earthquake.
An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 occurred on Tuesday in the Tanimbar Islands, a group of around 30 islands in the Maluku province of Eastern Indonesia. The earthquake caused panic among the residents and resulted in many fleeing their homes.
Aftershocks of at least 4 have been reported following the initial earthquake and it was felt in some parts of Northern Australia. Although the earthquake was powerful, initial reports suggest that damage to buildings and infrastructure is limited.
An earthquake occurred in Indonesia, causing damage to at least 15 homes and 2 school buildings. One person was reported to be injured. The tremor was felt strongly for a duration of 3-5 seconds.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck Indonesia at a depth of 130km at 2:47 am local time. The country’s geophysics agency, BMKG, reported the tremor. A tsunami warning was issued but later lifted at 5:43 am.
BMKG (Indonesia’s geophysics agency) reported that based on the observations of four tide gauges near the earthquake’s epicenter, no significant changes in sea level were detected and there was no tsunami anomaly. Dwikorita Karnawati, the head of BMKG, advised people living near the coast to continue with their daily activities.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 occurred in Indonesia, which was initially reported as 7.7 by the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and the U.S. Geological Survey.
There were also four aftershocks reported, with the strongest one being 5.5 magnitudes, according to BMKG (Indonesia’s geophysics agency). Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it a seismically active region, prone to frequent earthquakes.
A previous earthquake of 5.6 magnitudes struck the heavily populated province of West Java in November and resulted in the deaths of over 300 people and the destruction of homes.
