“Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s health had been deteriorating due to his advanced age for several days, as reported by the Press Office in updates on the situation.

Pope Francis publicly announced the worsening of his predecessor’s health at the end of the last General Audience of the year on December 28.”

“At the request of Pope Francis, people around the world prayed for Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who was described as “very ill.”

The Pope asked that the Lord provide comfort and support to the Pope Emeritus as he bore witness to his love for the Church until the end.

In response to this call to prayer, numerous initiatives and expressions of solidarity and support emerged from people and secular leaders on every continent.”

Funeral plans
